Will it be curtains for the Wii U soon? While the game console seems to be struggling to catch up to Sony and Microsoft in the game console segment, Nintendo big boss Satoru Iwata bares that a new game console is currently in development.

The new game console is touted to be a brand new concept and will be codenamed NX.

Iwata made the announcement during a press conference where the main agenda was actually the company's new mission of creating mobile games. The media event was actually held to announce the company's partnership with DeNA, a Japanese mobile gaming company.

This means that gamers can expect to see more of the Nintendo characters appearing on smartphone games on new multi-platform software devices.

Could this be tied up with the NX game console? From the looks of it the answer is yes. Though specifics are limited for now, Iwata did say that more information concerning the new game console could come out in the coming months.

However it remains to be seen how the NX game console could stand up to the existing players in the gaming console market. Can it help Nintendo move up or reclaim the top spot where it had lorded years ago?

While we await the NX game console, the Nintendo 3DS or Wii U should be safe for now. Until the time comes when the NX game is ready to be unravelled, the current bunch of Nintendo game consoles remain the top attractions for Nintendo.

Also, it would be best to watch out how the Nintendo and DeNA partnership turns out. What games lay on the horizon? Which characters will we see in action once more? That and more should be the things to watch out for now.
