'NCIS' season 12 spoilers: Gibbs' old covert identity resurfaces in 'Blast from the Past'

Fans are being treated to a deeper look at the characters of "NCIS," and Gibbs has been in the forefront of the episodes lately. What a season it has been for him, and episode 16 won't be any different.

The new episode is titled "Blast From the Past" and it is actually about an undercover work that Gibbs did two decades ago. It is discovered that one of the covert identities he used then was also used by someone else — a murder victim. And so, the plot thickens. The official synopsis goes:

"A covert identity created for one of Gibbs' undercover cases 20 years ago resurfaces after a murder victim is found living under the alias."

The episode's plot sounds serious, but the preview has a different tone to it. It is humorous at best and focused on how "notoriously low tech" Gibbs is.

In the preview, Tony is having a conversation with Gibbs' covert identity. Tony asks if he is a "computer nerd" and Gibbs replies "computer technician," which makes Tony laugh hard. However, it also hints that Gibbs may be going undercover again. The prologue says, "So why is he going high tech?" and it shows scenes where he appears to be under a geeky covert identity once more.

"Blast From the Past" sure does look like an interesting story with a comic take to it. Then again, what's very obvious this season 12 is how the story of the characters are done. The writers are continuing to give a more in-depth look into the past stories of the characters.  According to CarterMatt, these back stories help fans know more about the characters' histories before they started working for NCIS and how they got there to begin with.

"NCIS" season 12 episode 16 will air on Tuesday, Feb. 24, on CBS.
