Renowned filmmaker and die-hard Knicks fan Spike Lee holds the fort in the MyCareer mode for "NBA 2K16," the latest in the 15-year-old popular basketball simulation franchise. In a new trailer for the game, 2K Sports officially introduces Lee as the writer and director of the single-player campaign.
"By writing and directing the MyCareer storyline, Spike brings the real world experience of the NBA to life like never before," Greg Thomas, president of game developer Visual Concepts, which did Lee's new task for the last five years, said in a statement. "Working with Spike Lee on NBA2K16's MyCareer has elevated our most popular game experience from both a visual and narrative perspective."
The filmmaker, according to 2K spokesman Ryan Peters, shot about 90 minutes of cinematic narrative, which equates to 12 hours of in-game spectacle, which features a protagonist and antagonist. In the new one-minute trailer, Lee described how the story bears great significance to "NBA 2K16."
"It's about the trials and tribulations of life on a big stage with the money, fame, temptations, family members, the press, fans, all that stuff," Lee explains in the video. "On these courts, the story is everything. It's what makes us cheer and boo before the game has even started."
On the other hand, three basketball stars are gracing the cover: MVP Stephen Curry from Golden State Warriors; Anthony Davis from New Orleans Pelicans; and James Harden from Houston Rockets. 2K will provide three interchangeable covers. The studio will slot in all three foldable inserts in the physical copy of the game and it will be up to the gamers to choose who, for them, should be the face of "NBA 2K16." This way, players have the liberty to choose their favorite athlete.
"NBA 2K16" will be available on Sept. 29 for the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4 and PC. Those who pre-order the title will get the chance to play it four days before its actual launch.
