MLB 2015 news: Is Ben Zobrist headed to Giants?

Ben Zobrist of the Tampa Bay Rays could be packing up and leaving the team soon and his next place of destination could be San Francisco.

Such is a result of the recent signing of Asdrubal Cabrera though everything has been put on hold pending a physical. Aside from that, all indications seem to point to Zobrist being the odd man out of the rotation and someone seen that the Rays would release to help bring down their payroll.

Zobrist is set to earn $7.5 million in 2015 after the team picked up their option on the 35-year-old shortstop who is expected to be the odd man out. Zobrist has shown that he can still play and is certainly capable of putting up five-win seasons. His age may be an issue but Zobrist has been showing his effectiveness quietly thus justifying the fat pay that he is getting.

The Rays will need to dispose of some players since Cabrera's paycheck is reportedly worth close to $8 million. From all indications it seems that Zobrist will become dispensable and the Giants are said to be seriously interested in acquiring his services. If so, this would be the second time that the Giants would be showing their interest for Zobrist. They also inquired about him last season.

The Giants are in need of a player to man their corner outfield and Zobrist fits that position perfectly. But assuming that the Giants do go all out for Zobrist, there is no word on who would be involved in the trade. Also, there is a looming possibility that third team could enter the picture to help consummate the deal.

Though it is still the off season, there is that possibility that Zobrist may still be donning the Rays uniform once the seasons tarts. But if so, don't expect that to be long since the Rays are looking to reap dividends from their newly acquired shortstop/second baseman, Asdrubal Cabrera.
