Microsoft Surface Phone leaks: Device appears in benchmark test

With Microsoft finally releasing a laptop billed as the MacBook killer, a smartphone out of Redmond becomes all too possible. For a while now, the so-called Microsoft Surface Phone has been a subject of rumors and leaks, the latest of which sees the device in a benchmark test.

As old as the speculations that the software giant will eventually release a laptop are rumors about the possible smartphone outing of the company. The first time rumor mills started churning details about a Microsoft-made handset was three years ago.

But it looks like the device is almost ready. The prototype tested in the benchmark test had a pre-release version of Windows 10 Mobile on board as the build is the same as the ultimate Windows 10 edition for desktop. The benchmark test also had Edge 12 registered as the browser.

Not much was revealed about the remaining aspects of the Microsoft Surface Phone except for its 640x360 screen resolution, which GSM Arena finds a bit strange. The site believes that it is possible that the prototype was only tested on different screen quality.

Other speculations, however, point to the handset from Microsoft able to run Win32 desktop apps. That being said, it is expected to house an x86 processor. This isn't exactly undoable for Microsoft.

The tech company allegedly has plans to make PC apps available on the Windows Phone store, thanks to the infamous Continuum, a feature that debuted in the Windows 10 that allows users to sync their Windows devices seamlessly.

When rumors about the device were fuelled back in 2012, Microsoft had only released Lumia Windows smartphones, the latest being the Microsoft Lumia 950 and 950 XL, which also serve as the tech firm's flagships.

At the moment, there's no word on the release date or the rest of the specs sheet of the Microsoft Surface Phone.
