Microsoft Lumia 940, 940 XL release, specs rumors: Microsoft ditches flagships for next-generation handsets?

Nokia Lumia 930

For a while, rumor mills have been churning information about Microsoft's next premium flagships dubbed as the Lumia 940 and 940 XL. However, there's a new report saying that these pair of Windows phones will not be called as such and will instead go by the names Lumia 950 and 950 XL.

This claim came from IT Home, a Windows phone-centric publication based in China. According to the site, the Redmond tech giant is jumping straight from the Lumia 930, which is currently the latest and most advanced in its series, all the way to a next generation Lumia 950.

This report is also backed by another source that Phone Arena cited. According to the source, the purported Lumia 950 and 950 XL are codenamed Talkman and Cityman, respectively. These were the same monikers the 940 and the 940 XL were given to as per previous reports.

IT Homes says that the Lumia 950 aka Talkman will come with a 5.2-inch display with 2K resolution. It will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor, which should work nicely and efficiently with 3 GB of RAM. There will be a roomy 32 GB of inbuilt space for files, apps and games as well.

This smaller Lumia flagship is reportedly getting a 20-megapixel camera on the back and on its front will be a 5-megapixel selfie snapper. It is also touted to come equipped with a large 3000 mAh battery and a USB Type-C reversible connector.

The bigger Lumia 950 XL comes in a bigger package, too. That means a larger 5.7-inch 2K display, a more powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset, and a larger 3300 mAh battery. It is said to have three LED flash for its 20-megapixel primary camera. It reportedly has the same front-facing shooter as it smaller kin.

Both models have microSD slots and are reportedly going to be dressed in a slim all-metal unibody, which will make them look more premium than any other Lumia handset around. Most importantly, they will be the first phones to don Windows 10.

IT Home says that the duo will be unveiled in October and will hit the market by November.
