Folks on a tight budget who are looking for a smartphone can turn to the Moto G 2014 and the Microsoft Lumia 535. Moto G has been Motorola's sales hub for awhile as it gives real value for money. Lumia 535 is special, being the first of its kind to drop the Nokia label. The latter tends to be friendlier to the pocket but both would not burn a hole in it anyway, so it all comes down to the usability.

While the operating system will have users divided already, specs and pricing might cause others to switch sides. The Lumia handset runs Windows 8.1. The other has Android KitKat available but was recently made eligible for an Android Lollipop update. For those who will give it a go, this showdown will matter.

Both smartphones come with a 5-inch IPS LCD display but their resolutions set them apart. The Microsoft handset can render 540 x 960 pixels and a 220 ppi pixel density. The Motorola device is a notch better with 720 x 1280 HD screen resolution and a 294 ppi pixel density. Looking under the smartphones' hoods, Moto G continues to be the face-off frontrunner. Lumia 535 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor and an Adreno 302 for graphics support. Moto G houses a newer processor, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 and a slightly better Adreno 305 GPU. Both come with 8 GB of RAM and microSD slots. However, Motorola's device can only go up to 32 GB. Microsoft's handset can support up to 128 GB.

There is a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera ready in the Lumia 535. Users can capture videos in 480 pixels at 30 frames per second. For taking selfies, another 5-megapixel shooter will do the fix. The Moto G has an 8-megapixel rear-facing snapper that can shoot HD clips at 30 frames per second. A 2-megapixel front snapper comes with it as well. The battery life department brings a close battle. With its 1905 mAh battery, a Lumia 535 can last up to 13 hours of talk time. The Moto G 2014 sports a 2070 mAh battery, which puts up usage of up to 12 hours.

Now, there is the all-important price range. The Lumia 535 requires less with only a $169.99 price tag. The Moto G costs $179, but according to Android Central, this handset is up for grabs in Amazon for only $149.
