Los Angeles Lakers trade news: Jeremy Lin a free agent or heading to Houstons Rockets?

With the Lakers season seemingly over despite playing only half of the regular season, it doesn't look like any help will be on the way for the remainder of the season.

With prospects like Greg Monroe of the Detroit Pistons and Goran Dragic technically taken out of the trading circle, the best the Lakers can do right now is to look forward to the free agents once the 2014-15 NBA Season ends.

And while that seems like months away, the first order of business that the Lakers may have in mind is to dislodge high salaried players who may eventually jump ship. And of course one of them is Jeremy Lin.

It is no secret that Lin has been stricken off coach Byron Scott's roster and that word of his possible trade has been going around for quite some time. To date there are no certain team destinations but one potential place is where Lin came from before donning the purple and gold – Houston.

The Rockets are in need of guards at the moment and Lin could be a prospect. Though that scenario seems quite odd considering Lin had wanted out in the first place, he did have a lot of fine moments with the Rockets.

With the Lakers not expected to go beyond the regular season, the opportunity to continue playing for the regular season and beef up the backcourt of coach Kevin McHale could be a logical possibility.

And what if Lin fails to hum with the Rockets? Well, the end of the current season would mean that Lin will most likely end up a free agent and try out other teams.

But first thing's first. Could the Rockets and the Lakers strike a deal for Linsanity?
