Australian actor and director, Mel Gibson, and Donald Glover have been rumored to be in talks regarding a "Lethal Weapon" sequel. If this is true, this will make it the fifth film in the "Lethal Weapon" series, and a reunion of the two co-stars since 1998's "Lethal Weapon 4." From previous reports, the movie's fruition seems very doable with the original director, Richard Donner, reportedly at the helm.
In a report by Deadline, the original creative team of "Lethal Weapon" have been discussing the possibility of another continuation of the long-running film franchise. The script writer for "Lethal Weapon 4," Channing Gibson, has been reported to be the targeted writer for the fifth movie a well. The studio for making the last four movies happen, namely Warner Bros., is part of the discussion as well.
The first "Lethal Weapon" movie was released back in 1987 and was a tremendous success back then. This is why more sequels have been spawned and the franchise has raked in an estimated $995 million worldwide. After the last 1998 film, there was even a series created for television with the same name. According to NME, "Lethal Weapon 5" being in the works is not entirely news at this point.
Reportedly, the fifth movie has been in the backburner by the same people for about 10 years now, and has even gone through deliberations about a potential reboot. However, this obviously did not happen. Regardless of the massive talks occurring between the original creative team as well as Warner Bros., it is still very possible for the sequel to not push through.
The television series starring Damon Wayans as Roger Murtaugh, and Clayne Craford as Martin Riggs, was reportedly a very decent one. However, according to Maxim, nothing beats the chemistry and dynamics of Gibbs and Glover themselves. This is why the rumors about a fifth movie is going to be a big one, especially for diehard fans of the action-comedy movies.
Now that Gibson and Glover are getting in their 60's and 70's respectively, the movie could be their last hurrah.
