'High School Musical 4' release date, rumors: Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, and Ashley Tisdale not expected to return

Despite the reports that the original Wildcats will be back for "High School Musical 4," this might not be the case, especially with lead stars Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens.

The former, who made theater-loving jock Troy Bolton popular, has said back in May that he wants to forget about his "High School Musical" past, or, at least, the audience.

"I step back and look at myself and I still want to kick that guy's ass sometimes. Like, f—k that guy," the actor said in an interview with Men's Fitness of his younger self for starring in the Disney franchise.

"He's done some kind of cool things with some cool people, he did that one thing [Neighbors] that was funny, but I mean he's still just that f—king kid from High School Musical," he went on to say.

Efron does not want to be known as the guy in the Disney film as he has done so many projects after that. These words will lose meaning if the actor were to make an appearance in "High School Musical 4."

A few years ago, Efron went so far to  say that he is not proud of his "High School Musical" days. The actor said that he has tried to forget about his Disney fame and that it is not something to celebrate about.

"The face on the lunchbox and s—t, you can't share that with your friends," Efron said. With such feisty remarks, it is hard to imagine him reprising his role in "High School Musical 4."

Reuniting with Vanessa Hudgens will also be a tall order, especially with reports that he is actually avoiding his former girlfriend. This is believed to be the reason he missed the franchise's 10th anniversary early this year.

Apart from Efron and Hudgens, another cast member unlikely to return in "High School Musical 4" us Ashley Tisdale, who played the role of Sharpay Evans.

The actress, who even starred in a "High School Musical" spin-off, "Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure," has already said that she is not reprising her role.

The closest fans can get with the original cast in "High School Musical 4" is the inclusion of a Troy Bolton-like character, who also happens to be a cousin of Sharpay and her twin, Ryan (Lucas Grabeel).
