British boy band One Direction opened the Teen Choice Awards 2013 show on Aug. 11, with a performance of their latest single "Best Song Ever."
The band took home four awards – Choice Summer Tour, Choice Group, Choice Single (Live While We're Young), and Choice Love Song (Little Things).
Harry Styles' sudden bout of twerking during the show sent Twitter into a frenzy.
Hosts Darren Criss and Lucy Hale encouraged the One Direction member to take a second in the spotlight, and the 19-year-old suddenly broke with a twerk – which is a new dance move involving the hips to move up and down.
The move surprised everyone, including fellow bandmate Zayne Malik, who was seated behind him. Within seconds of Styles' sudden performance, fans took to Twitter immediately and the hashtag "#HarryDroppedThatThunThunThun" of his impromptu twerk started to trend. GIFs and videos of him doing the move quickly went viral
Afterwards, Styles tweeted: "Note to self: Don't 'twerk.'"
Styles also won the Top Hottie and Best Smile category.
