'Guardians of the Galaxy' animated series cast news: 'Guardians of the Galaxy' animated series cast updates: Will Friedle, Kevin Richardson, David Sobolov and more

 Disney XD

"Guardians of the Galaxy" is not only getting a sequel. Marvel is working on an animated series for it, too. In fact, the comic book giant has finally named the actors behind the well-loved space-faring superhero squad.

Kevin Michael Richardson will be the one to say "I am Groot" as Marvel tapped him to be the extraterrestrial tree-like superhero that everyone loves for the upcoming Disney XD animated series. He was the first actor Marvel has announced to be joining the spin-off. It won't be the first time for the 50-year-old in-demand voice actor to step into the Marvel universe. He served as the voice behind several characters under the Marvel umbrella. There's time-traveler mutant Bishop in "Wolverine" and "X-Men," and Nick Fury in the animated series "Super Hero Squad," among many others.

Best known for the coming-of-age ABC sitcom "Boy Meets World," Will Friedle is bound for intergalactic locales now that he will become Star-Lord, the interplanetary policeman played by "Jurassic World" lead Chris Pratt in the "Guardians of the Galaxy" movie. Friedle took part in a number of animated series and films like "Batman Beyond" and "Kim Possible." He was also in "Thundercats," "Transformers: Robots in Disguise" and "Ultimate Spider-Man."

Drax the Destroyer will be voiced David Sobolov, whose rich voice-acting credits include "Ultimate Spider-Man," "Avengers Assemble" and the "Agents of SMASH" as well as "Halo 4" and "Injustice: Gods Among Us." On the other hand, Trevor Devall will be playing the role of expert marksman and master tactician, Rocket Raccoon, first played by Bradley Cooper in the movie. Devall was also in "Ultimate Spider-Man" for the same character. He was Cyclops in "X-Men Evolution."

The "Guardians of the Galaxy" animated series was first introduced at the New York Comic Con 2014. Disney and Marvel are making headway for the spin-off, which has Alan Fine, Dan Buckley, Joe Quesada and Jeph Loeb as executive producers. "Guardians of the Galaxy" is scheduled to premiere this year.
