Life goes on for the doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital even without McDreamy. "Grey's Anatomy" season 12 is shaping up to be a fresh season as it is said to be undergoing serious changes in almost every aspect.

This major overhaul starts with the cast. Rumor has it that Katherine Heigl will reprise her role as Izzie in the long-running medical drama. Last time fans saw the doctor was back in season 6, when she decided to fly to Seattle after she and Alex called it quits.

This will be particularly interesting, knowing that Alex is now paired and very happy with Jo, played by Camilla Luddington. In an interview with TV Line, the actress said that "it would be nuts," although she quickly added that she is open to "anything that would make for a good storyline."

Luddington is worried about Jo's relationship with Alex. Considering that current circumstances are kind to the couple, she said, "I just don't trust things are going to continue to go well."

However, Latino Health reports that Heigl's return to the series is a tall order. The site says that the actress, who was in the show from season 1 to season 6, left because of a conflict between her and series creator Shonda Rhimes.

Heigl expressed her interest in returning to "Grey's Anatomy" back in 2012, at least for her character's closure, telling TV Line that "if they want me to return for an arc, I would love to know where Izzie is now. It's been a couple of years. I really hope she's succeeding somewhere."

As of now, there is no word about the return of Izzie in the show. But knowing that the series is projected to run more seasons, the possibility is still there.

"Grey's Anatomy" season 12 will premiere Sept. 24.
