'Game of Thrones' season 8 release date, plot rumors: Dany to suffer a betrayal, but not until 2018

The game is coming to a close, and the throne lays waiting. Now that season 7 of the critically acclaimed show "Game of Thrones" has ended, the fans too will lay waiting for yet another year before they witness the epic conclusion of the series.

HBO's "Game of Thrones" just dropped its season finale, leaving in its wake several plot twists and developments: Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) was finally revealed to be Aegon Targaryen, Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish (Aidan Gillen) is dead, and Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) has seemingly left his sister-lover Cersei (Lena Headey).

With the White Walkers marching towards Westeros and Cersei intent on keeping the Iron Throne to her name, what's going to happen next in the world of ice and fire?

There's no official news yet, but one theory says that Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) may be betraying his new queen for his old one.

The season finale shows Tyrion catching Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and Jon/Aegon in bed, and he doesn't look happy. Daenerys was prophesiZed to be betrayed thrice — "once for blood and once for gold and once for love" — and fans are convinced that the first two have already been fulfilled: Mirri Maz Duur's murder of Dany's unborn child (blood) and Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen)'s selling of information about Dany to Varys (gold).

This leaves only treason for love left unfulfilled, and it may just be that Tyrion feeling spurned by Dany may lead him to tell his sister Cersei about the Mother of Dragon's plans.

Another theory says that Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel) will betray Dany to help her lover Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson) out of Casterly Rock.

Either way, there will be a betrayal coming soon for Dany, but fans may have to wait another year before they get to witness it.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau told Collider that filming for season 8 will not start until October, which means that following the show's schedule in the past, the final season will not premiere until the end of 2018 or sometime in 2019.

HBO head of programming Casey Bloys also warned fans that they may have to go 18 months without "Game of Thrones."

Season 8 of the show will have six feature-length episodes. HBO announced earlier this year that they will be creating four spin-offs for the series.
