Floyd Mayweather next fight rumors: A KO win by Miguel Cotto could spark Mayweather return

Legendary trainer Freddie Roach has been known to come up with the wildest scenarios and the latest one should be interesting.

The problem is that right now, it doesn't appear that the fish he is trying to catch will bite, although no one knows. The fish is named Floyd Mayweather Jr., the same fighter who has time and again reminded everyone that he is officially retired so let him be.

Regardless, it is worth checking what Roach has up his sleeve.

As everyone knows, World Boxing Council (WBC) middleweight champion is set to clash with Mexican brawler Saul "Canelo" Alvarez this coming weekend. Although it seems that the fight is pretty tough to call, Roach wants Miguel Cotto to do something different, something that Mayweather was unable to do when he faced Alvarez back in 2013.

Mayweather won that one handily via unanimous decision.

Ironically, Mayweather also squared off against Cotto (2012) and, of course, won. But at that time, Mayweather found Cotto one tough customer despite the win.

Cotto did mention back in August that if given the chance, he would want another match with Mayweather. But this was only if Mayweather were not hanging up his gloves after his fight with Andrew Berto.

And as everyone knows, Mayweather won that and retired, although there are a lot (Roach included) who refuse to believe that the undefeated American has actually retired.

The belief is that he will return in 2016 to fight again and break that 49–0 tie with Rocky Marciano and Roach believes that an impressive win over Alvarez could interest the undefeated American.

It could or could not materialize but above anything else, Cotto and Roach may want to take care of business first before looking ahead.

Alvarez is one tough hombre and surely, a knockout is easier said than done.

Other than that, Roach may have forgotten that the WBC has ordered the winner to fight Gennady Golovkin next as well, as reported by BoxingScene. So assuming Cotto wins against Alvarez, how can they pull off a possible rematch with Mayweather?
