'Driveclub' free edition to be removed from Playstation Plus list

Fans of the racing sim genre for the Playstation 4 were ecstatic when Sony announced that it would be releasing a trimmed-down, sort-of-a-trial version for its exclusive "Driveclub" racing title and make it available for free via its members and rewards program, PS Plus.

However, after more than three months of staying on the free games list, the "Driveclub" PS Plus version will be taken down from the PS Store on Oct. 6. After next week, the version will be free to play only for those who have already activated the title.

The free version of the game should've enjoyed a longer stay at the PS Plus list had it launched as scheduled. The free edition of "Driveclub" was supposed to be released as one of the accompanying games when the PS4 launched in November 2013. However, problems were found in the game's codes, and the release was pushed back to October last year. For the second time, the release of the free version was delayed, until finally, the PS Plus Edition of "Driveclub" rolled out last June.

The PS Plus edition of "Driveclub" is a trimmed-down version of the racing sim game from Evolution Studios. The title only included 15 cars and 13 tracks set in India.

Meanwhile, the full version of the game continues to get updates and patches for its players. But while the game currently enjoys a huge following, it is still up in the air if Evolution Studios will follow up with a sequel, or if Sony will prefer an entirely new racing sim title altogether.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Sony's Shu Yoshida said, "The driving genre's a very difficult market right now. The team, we need to find a great angle for the racing to continue, to come up with a new racing game, if we're to look at another racing title. Creative ideas come when things are tough, so that lightbulb moment, I'm looking forward to."
