'Dragon Ball Super' trailer: familiar characters return

Goku as he appears in his Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan form Toei Company

"Dragon Ball Super," the newest anime following Goku and the gang's high-geared skirmishes, gets its first ever trailer. The clip is only 15 seconds long and while it does not give fans a clue on what the series is about, it does show the bevy of characters set to appear in the series .

The trailer shows Goku and other dearly loved and genuinely reviled characters like Piccolo, Gohan, Beerus and Mr. Satan all returning for a new round of intergalactic quests and chaos. The video is championed by Goku's voice inviting "Dragon Ball Z" fans to join them in their new battle.

"Dragon Ball Super" is set in a world where Majin Buu is simply regarded as another bad guy defeated by Goku. The events in the series happen before the 28th World Martial Arts Tournament and planet Earth is once again threatened by a new powerful enemy after enjoying a moment of peace.

The new show is the first "Dragon Ball" series in 18 years. Apart from the long wait, Forbes says that fans are excited for the series because Akira Toriyama, the genius behind Goku's rich tales and massive universe, is on the project. He didn't take part in the making of "Dragon Ball GT," the last series in the lineup.

"Dragon Ball Super" will premiere in Japan on July 5. It is still unknown if the series will be shown in North America. While that aspect still hangs in the balance, fans outside of Japan can look forward to a companion manga for the show that is set to be released on June 20.

Fans in North America will also be treated to a summer showing of "Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F'," which was released in Japan back in April. The film shows the rebirth of Frieza, who once again challenges Goku in an epic battle.
