'Destiny: The Taken King' DLC: New expansion pack is double the price - why?

When developer Bungie announced that a third DLC will be coming to its futuristic space-age shooter "Destiny," many players were ecstatic to know that the game will be greatly expanded. Following close to the heels of the second expansion, "House of Wolves," the third DLC "The Taken King" is set to be launched next month, coincidentally a year after "Destiny" took off.

However, many fans were not pleased when Bungie announced its price tag. When "The Taken King" takes off next month, players will need to purchase the add-on for $40, almost double the price of the two previous expansions, the first "The Dark Below" and the current "House of Wolves."

In an exclusive IGN podcast, Bungie Community manager Eric Osborne clarified why a hefty price tag accompanies the upcoming expansion.

Osborne explained, "You've got a full campaign, [and] I think people are going to enjoy the cinematics, the characters, the missions. We're taking you to the Dreadnaught, to Phobos, up into colony ships."

Apart from the more obvious gameplay enhancements and improvements that complement expansions, "The Taken King" will add more content to the base game, at least much more than the two previous DLCs had. The new location, the Dreadnaught, is more massive than the other locations introduced in the first two expansions.

Osborne added, "We've got the Dreadnaught, which is not just a big new destination to explore, it's really deep and layered, there's tons of little secrets and things you can collect; riddles and clues and stories and quests and quest logs and more guns and more gear and exotics."

Aside from the new location, "The Taken King" is also set to introduce a number of both regular and DLC-exclusive weapons and gears, as well as six Strikes – three completely new and three revised from the base game. In addition, the upcoming DLC will also add seven maps to the Crucible multiplayer mode.

"The Taken King" rolls out for all "Destiny" platforms on Sept. 15.
