'The Big Bang Theory' season 9 spoilers: Something to happen between Sheldon and Amy?

The Big Bang Theory season 9 CBS

CBS recently announced that the viewers' favorite nerd crew will be back for "The Big Bang Theory" season 9 on Sept. 21, with the sitcom set to return to its Thursday timeslot on Nov. 5. Now, fans have a specific date to look forward to in learning what's next for the lovable gang.

Season 8 of the long-running sitcom ended with Sheldon's and Leonard's romantic relationships in ruins and on the rocks.

Amy broke up with Sheldon after realizing he is incapable of taking serious things seriously. In the middle of a special lip-locking moment, the physicist had to give way to his urge to talk about The Flash, which turned kissy Amy to manic Amy faster than the Scarlet Speedster, which ultimately led her to break up with Sheldon in the season 8 finale.

Meanwhile, Leonard has a lot of explaining to do before he gets Penny's "I do." On their way to Las Vegas where they were planning to tie the knot, Leonard made a clean breast of it and admitted kissing another girl while he was away. He wanted to make sure he won't have secrets when Penny becomes his wife, even big ones.

There is still no solid detail about how things are going to work out between the couples, but showrunner Steve Molaro said that "something is going to happen between them" because Sheldon is "so fond" of Amy. This goes to show that Sheldon will not let go of the girl he wants to marry that easily.

"We're all very invested in all these characters. People hit road bumps in their lives and hopefully they'll deal with it or not, but that's the fun excitement of what we're looking to have happen coming back," Molaro told The Hollywood Reporter.

As for the rest of the gang, Howard and Beth mull over expanding the Wolowitz household.
