'American Horror Story' season 5 spoilers: What is the meaning of the top hat?

When "American Horror Story: Freak Show" concluded, fans started speculating what could be next for the show. Show creator Ryan Murphy has tackled different themes for all the four seasons and on top of that, also tackled relevant social issues. Will season 5 be any different?

It is highly doubtful that it will be because there seems to be a similar underlying social issue amongst the first four seasons. However, the main question now is, what will the fifth season be about?

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Murphy spilled that every season is connected to one another.

"They're all connected. We're just beginning to tell you how they're connected. They're all very separate but there's clues every season that we're now telling you how the different worlds are intertwined," he shared. "Part of the fun of the show is the Rubik's cube design of it, but, yes, there are purposeful connections, character connections, and similarities and things that connect that we'll continue to connect moving forward."

EW then asked about the top hat image on the cup that Maggie gave the cop. What was interesting is that the shot focused on the top hat. Was it a clue?

Murphy admitted, "That is a big season five clue! It's an arcane clue, but it's very purposeful, and it illuminates something that you'll be like, 'Oh! You dirty b******!'"

This led to fans speculating about what kind of clue the top hat is. Movie Pilot offered three theories about it. The first is that it was an Operation Top Hat and Extraterrestrials. For Movie Pilot, this is the most solid theory yet. The next is, it may have something to do with Abraham Lincoln or Lincoln, Nebraska. Could it be a change in location or a nod to all the popular people from history? The last is about Houdinis and Magicians, which is quite an obvious guess. Top hats and magicians always mix.

"American Horror Story" season 5 will air later in the year. Until then, fans can stay updated on the latest news for the new season.
