'American Horror Story' season 5 spoilers, news: Lack of central character leads to various story arcs

American Horror Story: Freak Show Facebook

Things ended in a very nasty way for the freaks in season 4 of "American Horror Story" dubbed as "Freak Show." Now fans cannot stop thinking about what horrors season 5 of the FX thriller has in the bag.

It seems, however, that the new season of the series will be very different from "Freak Show." This is in part due to Jessica Lange's exit from the franchise. According to Game N' Guide, the producers of the show are faced with the lack of a main character for the latest installment of the popular anthology, which led them to revert back to how it was in season 1, where no character was set as the focal point of the whole show. It seems to be a good move to pursue. Going back to the show's roots and having fans explore the characters individually, like how it was in previous "American Horror Story" chapters, shouldn't be bad at all.

However, the site also suggested that Kathy Bates, the actress who played the role of Ethel Darling in season 4, may be the one to stand at the forefront in the new "American Horror Story." This, however, was not further substantiated by the site — although it is not impossible. According to News Everyday, Jessica Lange may be moving to another show crafted by "American Horror Story" creator Ryan Murphy titled "American Crime Story." The site even said that Sarah Paulson (Bette and Dot in "Freak Show") is also being recruited by Murphy for the show. However, this remains to be seen as well.

With regards to the storyline "American Horror Story" season 5 will go for, many believe that the folks behind "Freak Show" have planted enough clues about the next terror to check out. Murphy has long hinted the involvement of a "top hat" in the forthcoming season. Interestingly, the recently-wrapped up season was peppered with clues found in menus and mugs of the diner featured in it.

With this in mind, fans are led to believe that "American Horror Story" season 5 will be set in 1950 Nevada where Operation Top Hat burgeoned. The operation is a bomb-testing program that made use of chemicals detrimental to the citizens of Nevada and Utah. Although it is highly likely that "American Horror Story" will take this direction, for now, there is still no way to know. it is still deemed best to wait for the series to return with season 5 sometime in October this year.
