A contest in Xiaomi's Facebook page could be an indication that the Chinese manufacturer is all set to bring out its newest smartphone offering to India, the Redmi 2. The puzzle shows words like "SNAPDRAGON," "QUICKCHARGE" and "EXPANDABLE," which are describing a particular yet undisclosed handset. Other words users can find include "WIDEANGLE," "MATTE" and "CORTEX."
The puzzle is unlikely referring to the Redmi 1S as stock for it has already ran out. Mi Note handsets do not have microSD card slots so that counts them out in the "expandable" bit. While Mi Note Pro is a good guess, it seems that Xiaomi has no plans of bringing that one to the surface just yet. This leaves the Redmi 2, which was made available in China in January but not yet in India, which is its second largest market.
The contest ran by Xiaomi gives users a chance to snag a priority pass for what could be another flash sale for the Redmi 2. It will end on March 12 so fans can expect announcements in the coming days. Details about the promotion can be found here.
The Redmi 2 is an entry-level device with decent specs and features packaged with an affordable price. The smartphone comes with a 4.7-inch HD display set at 1280 x 720 pixel resolution and a 312 ppi pixel density. Under the hood is a 64-bit 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor coupled with 1 GB of RAM. It has 8 GB of memory that is expandable up to 32 GB. The device also sports an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 2-megapixel selfie shooter. There's a 2200 mAh battery to power it up. Lastly, there is the ever-lovely perk of dual-SIM support, and Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and 4G LTE connectivity.
The Redmi 2 has an enhanced edition — one with 2 GB RAM. It is a bit of a conundrum if Xiaomi will put that one up again but it sure will be a hit if it does.
The Xiaomi Redmi 2 is priced at ¥699 or $113 so that translates to INR 6,999.
