Xiaomi Redmi 1S and Samsung Z1 share quite a few similarities. While the former is a product of a new manufacturer slowly establishing itself as a tech firm to watch out for, the latter is off an old hand that bears a relatively fresh operating system from Samsung called Tizen. Both these phones have travelled to India to capture the huge market, too. Lastly, the handsets have no way to burn a hole on the pocket. But how do these smartphones compare?
The Samsung offering was released just this month and it showed up with a 4-inch display that generates 480 x 800 pixels and a 233 ppi pixel density. The display of the Redmi 1S, on the other hand, is comparatively bigger at 4.7 inches. This also gives out 720 x 1280 pixels along with a 312 ppi pixel density.
The Z1 is powered by a Spreadtrum SC7727S processor while the Xiaomi phone is packed with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, which easily gets it the win. In terms of RAM, Samsung was a bit sparing by giving its device 765 MB of RAM. Xiaomi slotted in 1 GB RAM with its offering. Furthermore, the latter doubles the former's storage capacity, which is only at 4 GB. Interestingly, this is expandable up to 64 GB — higher than Xiaomi's 32 GB memory expansion.
Going to the imaging department, the Samsung Z1 merely gave it away to Xiaomi Redmi 1S. Samsung has its device offer a 3.15-megapixel shooter while Xiaomi's uses an 8-megapixel shooter, which allows HD video capture. A VGA camera was employed for the Z1 while the Redmi 1S has a 1.6-megapixel unit for its front snapper.
The Z1 is the second device to run Tizen. The new operating system still lags behind the larger competitors but the company seems to be adamant to make this one full-on software. Since the Z1's release in mid-January, Samsung has sold 55,000 units of the device. Xiaomi Redmi 1S, on the other hand, supports Android Jellybean 4.3. According to Gadgets NDTV, 25,000 Redmi 1S units sold out in India within five seconds yesterday.
Battery units are not too far-off. Xiaomi Redmi 1S has a 2000 mAh battery as the Samsung Z1 got a 1500 mAh battery. Both devices also have dual-sim support, which make them more appealing to buyers in India. The Xiaomi handset, which was released back in May last year, is sold for 120 euro. Samsung Z1, which ends up second in this matchup, substantiates its entry-level specs with an 80 euro price tag.
