Xiaomi was a virtually unknown brand some years ago. When it first invaded the smartphone market, Xiaomi was undoubtedly trying to give Apple a run for its money. Though their device ran on the Android OS, the features they implanted on the devices was obviously geared towards challenging what the iPhones and iPads could offer.
At that time, it was obvious that Apple was feeling some effects of Xiaomi's coming. Now it is Xiaomi's turn to feel the effects of falling short of targeted revenue sales, something that comes as a result of counterfeit and fake products coming out in the market.
As an example, the Mi Power Bank was said to be something that has sold about 30 million units per a report by Bloomberg. But when Xiaomi looked at their figures, the report only showed about 14.6 million, meaning that more than half of their supposed revenue is missing. And the answer to that was copycats have more or less accounted for that disparity.
Xiaomi was hit for copying the iPad and iPhone 5C with their Mi Pad years back. The OS may be different but Xiaomi obviously did some tweaks to somehow make them similar to the actual Apple products.
And apparently Xiaomi rose to greater heights, seeing their products scarcely available in the market, particularly in India. And now, the same trend has befallen the company and they are feeling the effects of having to deal with fake and counterfeit products.
In business such is to be expected and Xiaomi obviously knows it was coming. The good news is that Xiaomi has risen from practically nowhere and has become a familiar brand. And having been there, copying certain designs and all, they should have known better that someday, a company or individual could do the same.
Apparently that time has come, and now Xiaomi is feeling what Apple and other company have to deal with when it comes to counterfeit products.
