The last episode of "Tokyo Ghoul" ended in March 2015 and up to now, there is no official word from Studio Pierrot, the production outfit task to create the anime, on when the next season will air. There are speculations that the upcoming season will be based on the manga, where Ken Kaneki declared himself as the One-Eyed King.

"Tokyo Ghoul" season 2 departed from the manga, and the show created its own path. Some fans enjoyed the season, but there were far more who got disappointed. They got so dissatisfied that fans even organized an online petition to change its production company to Madhouse, which is known for "Death Note." Some fans even requested for a reboot of the anime series just to make it right.

In terms of the plot, it is suggested that it may take the "Tokyo Ghoule:re" series, which is set two years after the original series ended. The series features Haise Sasaki, leader of the special team of CCG investigators called the Quinx Squad, who were experimented on to gain ghoul abilities. The group is tasked to hunt down the more dangerous ghouls. Sasaki eventually remembers that is Ken Kaneki.

One of the most recent issues of the manga series involves Kaneki taking the title of King of Ghouls, or the One-Eyed King. It is also associated with death and destruction. This happened after Kaneki defeats Kishou Arima in chapter 86, AsianStarz reported.

Meanwhile, fans are also looking forward to the live-action movie of the manga, which will bring Masataka Kubota as Ken Kaneki and Fumika Shimizu as Touka Kirishima to the big screen. Yu Aoi will portray Rize Kamishiro, Nabokyuki Suzuki as Kotaro Amon and Yo Oizumi as Kureo Mado. Kentaro Hagiwara will be taking the helm of this project, which will be released in theaters during the summer of 2017, according to Crunchy Roll,
