'The Winds of Winter' release date, updates: George R.R. Martin may not even finish it by 2017

It looks like fans will be in for a longer wait for "The Winds of Winter," the sixth volume in George R.R. Martin's bestselling "A Song of Ice and Fire" series.

Readers seem to have accepted the possibility that the book will not be released this year. However, it is being said that a 2017 release might not be happening either.

It is no secret that the success of his works contributed to the delay of "The Winds of Winter" seeing that Martin had to do tons of conferences, interviews, travels, and projects to talk about them.

The bestselling author has cut down on such to be able to focus on the book. He said earlier this year that while a lot of the book has already been written, there are still tons he has to do. Rewriting is another story, and it will consume time as well.

Martin has been sharing snippets of "Winds of Winter" through his blog. A full-on preview of the novel is also available in the "Game of Thrones: Enhanced Edition," a special digital edition of the first book in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series.

It is exclusively available as an iBook, and it includes a lot of information about the characters, locations, and houses. There are also interactive maps for fans to explore.

"The digital book gives readers the ability to experience all this rich secondary material that had not been possible before. These enhanced editions available only on iBooks include sigils and family trees and glossaries," Martin said in the official press release.

"Anything that confuses you, anything you want to know more about, it's right there at your fingertips. It's an amazing next step in the world of books," the author went on to say.

With regards to "The Winds of Winter," an official release date is yet to be specified, although previous speculations suggest that an early 2017 launch is likely.
