The Legend of Zelda Wii U release date: After setbacks, game may finally arrive 2017

Fans of Legend of Zelda would be somewhat justified if they feel like they have been led on a wild goose chase regarding its release to the Wii U.

Nintendo has certainly flip-flopped on the release date, originally changing it from 2015 to 2016.  Now it seems like 2017 is the most likely window for the release of "Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild".

Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, admitted to Kotaku in an interview that he would rather not be pinned down on a date for the game.

"First of all, it would be great if I didn't have to put a release date out at all," he said. "But I have to."

Eiji Aonuma, the game series' producer, also commented on the delay to the game, suggesting it was more a question of quality, than the Japanese video game maker falling behind schedule.

"When we think about the release period for any Zelda game, we really want to get it out as soon as possible so that everybody can play and experience it," Aonuma explained. "But every time we make a Zelda, we want to make something new."

He added: "It's hard to gauge how long that's going to take.  And it's also hard to gauge at what point whatever we consider to be new is done."

2017 is somewhat obvious given that the UK has already been given a March 2017 release date window for the title, according to PC Advisor.  And it won't only be coming to the Wii U but the new Nintendo NX console.

Still, it will be a hard wait for fans after being given some tantalizing glimpses of the title and its gameplay at this year's E3 last month.

In an interesting departure from the norm for Nintendo, the game's main protagonist Link was seen exploring an extensive open world and Link will have to use his survival instincts and make the most of his surroundings to keep alive.

There is little known about the plot of the game, but what we do know is that Nintendo is looking to shift two million copies.
