The American crime-thriller television series by NBC, "The Blacklist," is well under way with five seasons -- which makes fans wonder if this season will be its last. Even though the ratings of the show are significantly high, coupled with a steady viewership, NBC has yet to renew the show for a sixth season. Regardless of the show's future, series executive producer Jon Bokenkamp revealed that the showrunners are not keen on concluding the show just yet.

As reported by Entertainment Weekly, Bokenkamp stated that season 5 is slated to end with a "cliffhanger" and a very "compelling" ending. It seems that the showrunners are already setting the series up for an exciting sixth season, despite the show still not renewed by NBC. It may please fans to know that the people working behind the scenes are not at all fazed by the possibility of the show getting canceled.

Bonkenkamp stated that the show's creators are passionate enough to continue penning the show's plot and still create a compelling narrative, even if there is any chance of NBC pulling the plug on them. They feel that there may be other ways to get the story out there, if the network will not be housing them anymore. However, if no opportunity presents itself in the event of a cancellation, the writers are prepared to come up with an abrupt ending.

Co-executive producer John Eisendrath added that the team behind "The Blacklist" is extremely confident with what they have to offer in the remaining episodes in the second half of season 5. He stated that the season will end in a major "cliffhanger," and will be leaving fans wanting to see more. However, if the network cancels the show, and no other streaming site or network adopts "The Blacklist," the show will forever end on a cliffhanger.

"The Blacklist" will be returning on Wednesday, Jan. 3, at 8 p.m. EST on NBC.
