'Supergirl' cast news: Actress Laura Benanti to play Alura Zor-El

As far as Krypton is concerned, the only thing that sticks into the minds of many is perhaps Superman being sent off to Earth before the planet's destruction. And it looks like the same scenario will be the case for Supergirl, her origin of which may not necessarily be familiar to DC comic followers.

The origin of Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) will apparently be shown and her birth mother will be portrayed by Laura Benanti, the same actress who appears on "Nashville." She is set to play the role of Kara's mother, Alura Zor-El.

Alura is a strong noblewoman whose wisdom and guidance will be shown every now and then as she tries to guide her daughter Kara throughout the series.

As for Kara, she is taken in by the Danvers who try to keep her secret identity and powers. But an unforeseen disaster once she reaches 24 forces Kara to use her powers before eventually embracing them and become the superhero she had always wanted to be.

Supergirl's first main foe is Lumberjack, a villain that is readily associated with her cousin Superman and Wonder Woman. Though Lumberjack isn't exactly one of the more popular enemies in the DC World, it will be interesting how a lesser-known adversary, whose appearance will be recurring, can size up with the feminine superhero.

Lumberjack will be introduced as a villain who is commissioned to determine the level of Supergirl's superhuman abilities.

On how that will pan out should be something to watch as well as the guidance and wisdom that Kara would be getting from her deceased mother Alura.
