After three Internet-breaking "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" trailers, two important characters from the original trilogy are still nowhere to be found. One is Threepio, whose absence remains unexplained. The other is the franchise's lead Luke Skywalker, whose nonappearance forces media outlets into a massive guessing game.
Of course, the Jedi's mysterious no-show has a reason and as it turns out, it is one that is carefully orchestrated by director JJ Abrams. When asked by the Associated Press about Luke's whereabouts, the filmmaker simply praised the good questioning and replied "I can't wait for you to find out the answer."
Abrams then revealed that Luke not showing up in any of the trailers is "no accident" but he won't provide an explanation just yet. At the moment, the "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" trailers only allowed fans to listen to Luke's voice as he talks about the Force running in his family.
This leads to speculations that in the upcoming film, the younger Skywalker might finally turn to the dark side. In the midst of the endless questioning about the character's no-show, there emerged footage from a 2005 episode of US television show "Dinner for Five."
Here, Mark Hamill, who plays iconic character, pitched the idea of an evil Luke. Abrams was there during the discussion too, which had many believing that the director took to the actor's wish and applied to "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" what Hamill wants to become of his character.
"As an actor that would be more fun to play. I just thought that's the way it was going from when we finished. I figured that's what will be the pivotal moment," Hamill said of the idea. Apparently, he has already imagined how this will play out when it happens.
"I'll have to come back, but it will be I have Han Solo in my crosshairs and I'll be about to kill him or about to kill the Princess or about to kill somebody that we care about. It's an old cornball movie, like World War II movies," he went on to say.
"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" will be out Dec. 18. Abrams says that the weeks moving forward will be all about applying visual effects.
