Marc Webb, who directed the "Amazing Spider-Man" films that starred Andrew Garfield as the wise-cracking, web-slinging superhero, has bittersweet feelings toward Peter Parker returning to his universe via a reboot being developed by Marvel and Sony.
In an interview with MTV, he admitted that the films were "very personal" and that it is "sad a little bit to surrender that in a way."
"A lot of people put a lot of effort into them — and Andrew and Emma and I, the producers worked very hard on them ... it was a really rewarding experience in many ways," Webb said.
Dennis Leary who was in the Sony reboots as Captain Stacy, revealed to IGN what Webb has planned for "Amazing Spider-Man 3," which fans will never see come to pass. These ideas involve Gwen, who died in the second movie, and her dad returning from the dead.
"I was part of the franchise, I briefly came back for 2. Part of the discussion was that possibly in 3, there was this idea, at one point, Spider-Man would be able to take this formula and regenerate the people in his life that had died," Leary said. "So there was this discussion that Captain Stacy would come back even bigger in episode 3."
This also means that actress Emma Stone would have been back in the film once more, with Peter attempting to resurrect his lady love.
But now, Webb is excited that Spider-Man will be reunited with his universe and more people and superheroes in it can tell more stories and tales about the web-slinging crime-fighter. He also added that the reboot is in good hands with the chosen director.
"I'm really psyched that Spider-Man is going back to the Marvel universe, I'm really excited to see that incarnation," he told MTV during the Comic-Con. "And Jon Watts is directing it, I knew him from the old music video days and he'd done some really fantastic music videos so it's really exciting."
The "Spider-Man" reboot, which will star Tom Holland as the new Peter Parker, will open in theaters on July 28, 2017. Recently, Marisa Tomei was rumored to play the role of Aunt May, which easily earned some backlash because the actress is deemed too young for the role. Tomei is 50 years old.
