The F1 Spanish Grand Prix takes place on Sunday and if qualifying is any indication this should be one of the most interesting Formula One weekends of the season so far. The race is scheduled with a start time of 1 p.m. BST (8 a.m. ET, 2 p.m. local) and can be watched on TV in the UK on Sky Sports 1, or in the US on the NBC Sports network. Sunday will see the F1 European leg of this season get underway, and things already look like they could be dramatic.
Nico Rosberg has made things interesting by beating Britain's Lewis Hamilton to pole position. This will be the first time this season that Rosberg has made it onto the pole, and that should provide a big challenge for Hamilton in achieving his goal to make it four wins from five races today.
Hamilton had been favorite for the Spanish Grand Prix, after winning at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya last season, and after his win in Bahrain three weeks ago. However, last year when he won here he had started on pole, so things will not be as simple this year.
The British F1 driver has a 27 point lead over his teammate and main rival, Nico Rosberg, coming into this race in Spain. Rosberg in turn is just a single point ahead of Sebastian Vettel, who has a good track record in Barcelona too, having won here in 2011.
Home fan favorite Fernando Alonso will be given a heroes welcome by supporters, however, he is unlikely to be competing for the win as his McLaren car has struggled behind the two Mercedes all season.
Rosberg has said ahead of the race that claiming pole position was definitely a big step in hoping to claim full points in Spain.
He has said, "Of course I needed it sooner rather than later. It's just one step in the right direction to winning this race. It was a good day in the office."
Rosberg managed to qualify for pole 0.267 seconds ahead of Hamilton, who complained about the balance of his car being off, which resulted in a lack of rear grip.
Hamilton clarified the relationship between his Mercedes teammate ahead of the race, saying: "The guy in the lead gets the optimum strategy and the guy behind gets a slightly different one. It is down to you to utilise it and make up for the disadvantage of being behind."
