Sony Xperia Z3, Z2 and more: Update to Android 5.1 Lollipop starting July

Sony is all set to release Android Lollipop to a myriad of its smartphones. The company has announced that Android 5.1 Lollipop, which serves as the newest build of the operating system, is now in development for most of its Xperia devices and will be initially available come July.

Owners of Xperia Z devices were recently treated to Android 5.0 Lollipop but those rocking the Xperia M2 and M2 Aqua, which still run Android 4.4 KitKat, have yet to make the jump. The good news is that these aforementioned devices are part of the company's massive Lollipop rollout plans.

The Xperia M2 and M2 Aqua will go straight to Android 5.1 after every Sony device in the popular Z lineup gets the OS. The latter, together with the Xperia T2 Ultra and the Xperia C3, is first in line and will be updated as early as next month. Sony assured users it won't be a long wait for the M handsets.

Back in March, Sony announced that there are no Android Lollipop update plans for its handsets except for the Z family, which made users upset and furious. Tech Times believes the disappointment this elicited drove the company to update its other lineups as well.

Sony will rollout Android 5.1 Lollipop starting July and this is the complete list of handsets (segregated by family) this covers:

  • Sony Xperia Z3 series: Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3v, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact
  • Sony Xperia Z2 series: Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet
  • Sony Xperia Z1 series: Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z1S, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z Ultra GPE
  • Sony Xperia Z series: Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR and Xperia Tablet Z
  • Sony Xperia M2 and Xperia M2 Aqua
  • Sony Xperia T2 Ultra
  • Sony Xperia C3

The rollout may vary depending on the region. Nonetheless, the Japan-based tech giant will start seeding Android Lollipop, which marks the return of the silent mode (it was absent in Android 5.0) and the abolition of the notorious memory leak glitch, next month.
