'Sons of Anarchy' spinoff, prequel news: Creator teases 'sweet surprises' coming in 'Mayans MC'

Even though it ended a couple of years ago, the Charlie Hunnam-led "Sons of Anarchy" continues to live on in the form of a spinoff, which was officially in script development back in May.

The spinoff, which will be titled "Mayans MC," will focus on the infamous Mayans Motorcycle Club, the biker gang that had a crucial role in the original biker drama. They owned two heroin factories and were involved in prostitution.

"Sons of Anarchy" creator Kurt Sutter took to Twitter to tease fans on the project. "Working hard on some sweet surprises," he said in a tweet that came with a photo of Marcus Alvarez (played by Emilio Rivera).

He also teased the "Sons of Anarchy" spinoff by posting a menacing photo of the gang with an exciting caption that reads "the return is near."

"Mayans MC" is described as "a dark, visceral family drama that takes a new look at the most American of icons, the 1% outlaw, this time reflected through a Latino lens."

Sutter will work with Elgin James for the "Sons of Anarchy" spinoff. The latter will be the producer, but he will also do the writing duties for the pilot episode.

"I wanted to find a strong, unique Latino voice," Sutter said explaining his plans for the "Sons of Anarchy" spinoff in a Deadline interview a few months back.

"Because I didn't think a white guy from Jersey should be writing about Latin culture and traditions. Elgin is that voice," he went on to say.

As per Deadline, James was part of a multi-ethnic national street gang that went after "neo-Nazi skinheads and drug dealers" for a decade and a half. Having such experience will help him depict the "Sons of Anarchy" spinoff as realistic as possible.

With regards to a possible prequel, the talks continue as to who will play the role of John Teller, father of protagonist Jax Teller played by Hunnam.

FX is yet to set a release date for "Mayans MC," although it is expected to be a dozen episodes long.
