'Sherlock' season 4 spoilers: Mary dies and Moriarty comes back to life?

With "Sherlock" away from television screens, fans kill time figuring out what sort of mind-boggling story the show has in store for them.

As a first, there were theories sprouting on the Web about Moriarty and how he may have cheated death. However, executive producer Steven Moffat put all those to rest when he bluntly said that no one can survive a gunshot right in the face, even if it were the brilliant-minded nemesis of Sherlock.

Viewers may not see another duel between the criminal mastermind and the masterful detective, but season 4 of the BBC series is promised to be darker than ever before. Moffat revealed that Sherlock and Watson will plunge into a "challenging place to go" and that they have all the ideas to do that well.

With this in mind, the season may bring such darkness to Watson. If speculations prove true, Sherlock's best friend will be wifeless. Rumor mills have been particularly cruel when it comes to Mary's fate in the series as new reports are claiming that she will die of miscarriage.

Fans were genuinely excited for the couple to welcome their new baby, but it seems that circumstances will take away Watson's wife and child from him. Should it be that harsh, fans turn their attention to their yearning for Sherlock to get a girlfriend.

With that said, it will be Molly or Janine racing to get out of the friendzone first. However, the detective sees romance as nothing more than a brain teaser. So, matters of the heart is as difficult to figure out as the crimes he solves.

Meanwhile, the "Sherlock" Christmas special, which is set to air this year, will likely feature a new yet traditional setting. According to reports, "Sherlock" will be taken to the Victorian era. This thought came about after images were leaked showing the characters dressed in old-fashioned garb.

"Sherlock" will return with season 4 sometime next year.
