Hollywood has been rife with controversy ever since producer Harvey Weinstein was accused of sexual harassment in multiple counts. The news sparked a fire in a lot of women in the entertainment business, and more of them have come forward not just to pin Weinstein, but to openly discuss the rampant sexual assault going on in the business. Recently, actress Rose McGowan has come forward as well, telling her own story of how she was exploited.
In a report by Independent, McGowan claimed that she had been sexually assaulted, which eventually led her to being banned from Hollywood. This would explain as to why she has not had any significant work in the past few years despite what looked like a promising career. The actress claimed that Weinstein had taken advantage of her in the past, and that she did not file charges because her lawyer advised against it saying that they would not win.
McGowan divulged more information in an interview with The Observer, and she has made it her personal mission to hunt down every person in the entertainment business who has had a hand in unwanted sexual advances amongst actresses. In the series of tweets that the actress released, she also urged the head of Amazon Studios, Roy Price, to stand by her and the other actresses so that the full truth of the story comes out.
After McGowan had threatened to make the alleged rape public, she was then threatened to be blacklisted in Hollywood, which meant that she would never be able to find work ever again. Like the other stories of those who came forward before her, the modus operandi seems to be similar across the board. According to Eyewitness News, McGowan was even given some money after an incident that she had in the hotel room with Weinstein.
Despite not coming forward after the rape, she had been blacklisted anyway, which changed the trajectory of her career forever. The evidence at this point seems compelling, now that the numbers of women speaking out against Weinstein has reached more than 30.
