'Revenge' season 4: Is it really bye bye, Daniel Grayson in new episodes?

Now that Daniel Grayson is gone, fans wonder how "Revenge" will progress without him. Although there is a little pinch of hope that the character will meet the same fate as his mother, Victoria, who came back to life as iDigital Times pointed out, fans will have to bear the anguish of watching him being laid to rest. Predictably, the return of the ABC hit series in January will start off with a funeral, TV Line shared.

Promotional stills from the upcoming episode show a grieving Victoria and other attendees, namely David, Nolan, Margaux and even Louise. Emily, expectedly, is nowhere to be found. If she does go there, the memorial service will likely culminate to another fatality at the worst. The great thing, though, is that Daniel will be seen in flashbacks in the upcoming episode titled "Epitaph."

"One of those [flashback] scenes was the last thing I shot," actor Josh Bowman told TV Line. "That was very strange to do."

Going back to the possibility of seeing the guy again, executive producer Sunil Nayar has something to say about that.

"Josh and I spoke at the beginning of the season about the journey we wanted to take Daniel on," Nayar told TVLine. "He and I were on the same page, wanting to take a big swing at the end of our winter finale, and wanting to see if we could do it in a redemptive way; that moment between [Emily and Daniel] was so beautiful at the end. It was also a way for us to keep shifting what the show is about so we never get complacent and the audience never knows what's coming next."

Carter Matt, on the other hand, looks at things at a wider perspective. The show can simply kill off a major character, as this has seemingly become its quirk. In turn, media outlets find it necessary to query about Emily's fate in the series.

Nayar gave his insights about it and told Entertainment Weekly, "Whether she lives or die, honestly we don't know yet. That is such a moving thesis for the show, because there is such loss that comes with this journey. What's interesting to me about how she would finish this journey is what sense of victory does she take and who does she get to walk away with, if she walks away at all?"

Nevertheless, "Epitaph" will see the effect of Daniel's death on everyone else's life. There will be more grieving, a change in Emily and Victoria's relationship and, quite possibly, a new leading man for the protagonist. Most importantly, the episode will see David making his best efforts "to protect his loved ones."

Catch "Revenge" on Jan. 4 on ABC.
