'Red Band Society' cancelled - Season 2? Could show be renewed?

Since Fox's "Red Band Society" took a winter hiatus, its future has been hanging on a balance. Many were worried that the show was cancelled prematurely due to the lack of a return date announcement. And when it was scheduled to return, the cancellation theory strengthened as it was moved to a different time slot, one that practically spelled doom for the show.

While Fox has been doing great with their shows like "Gotham," which has garnered great ratings, shows like "Red Band Society" was a disappointment. Early on, it didn't do well in the ratings. It was only able to pull in a total of 3 million viewers during the mid-season finale, a number that isn't worth the expense to produce the show.

According to Cinema Blend, production of the show was already "shut down" months ago. This week, Fox has made the decision — "Red Band Society" is officially cancelled.

For the fans, there is a slightly good news though. The cancellation won't be abrupt. Fox will still air the last three episodes of the show, but they will air them on Saturday nights.

Cinema Blend adds that they really did try to make the show work. Even after production was halted, the series continued to air on its regular timeslot. However, the expenses were just too much, considering it has an Oscar winning actor. The payroll was an issue.

So, will a renewal happen? It is unlikely.  For one, it doesn't have a huge fan base to rally its renewal. Next, it may need to cut down on the production costs for Fox to consider it. Then again, pulling down the production costs can decrease the quality of the hospital-drama. In such a case, it is just a lose-lose situation for everyone.

The last three episodes of "Red Band Society" will air starting Jan. 31 on Fox.
