Prescott lends support to charity bike ride for pastoral work with seafarers

John Prescott was among the dignitaries to cheer on a team of cyclists as they embarked on a 60-day bike ride in aid of the work of Apostle of the Sea.

The Sea-Wheeling ride challenges cyclists to make cover 60 towns in 60 days. This year’s team includes Apostleship of the Sea trustee David Savage, who plans to blog about the highs and lows of his experience en route.

Also present at the start of the ride in Hull last week was the Lord Mayor of Hull.

The cyclists are hoping to meet their target of £100,000 before the end of the ride.

The money raised will go towards the Catholic charity’s work with some of the 100,000 seafarers who visit British ports each year.

Seafarers are usually away from home for nine to 12 months at a time, suffering loneliness, depression and even exploitation, in addition to working in sometimes dangerous conditions.

Apostleship of the Sea chaplains and ship visitors offer pastoral and practical assistance to seafarers of all faiths and none.
