PlayStation 5 release date, specs news updates: Console to be released earlier than expected?

The PlayStation 4 Pro is next in line in Sony's console family, but there are already discussions on the PlayStation 5, which is rumored to arrive in 2018.

Analyst Damian Thong, who correctly predicted the PS4 Pro and Slim's arrival before others did, is back at it again, claiming that the next-generation PlayStation console will be released in the second half of the said year.

There is no explanation regarding the reasoning behind the said PS5 release date, but Gamepur says it will put Sony in a good position to counter Xbox Project Scorpio, which will be released holiday next year.

However, the site hopes that the company should let the PS4 Pro enjoy the spotlight for much longer since, by that time, it will only be out for a couple of years.

On that subject, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Andrew House has already discussed their approach as far as console life cycles go and how it can be applied in determining the release of the PS5.

"I'm not suggesting we want to bring the games industry to an 18-month-two-year cycle because then you would lose an awful lot of the fixed platform benefits we've enjoyed that allow for these really great leaps in game experience," House told The Guardian.

"However, we did think there was an opportunity to reflect on the traditional lifecycle, and on 4K technology, and say maybe there's an opportunity, within the course of a normal lifecycle to offer something else, something a little bit better, for a segment of the market that feels that this is important," he went on to say.

Releasing a new console within the life cycle of the current one is definitely something new for Sony, but this change will impact the release of PS5. Just how it will is something even the company has not focused on figuring out yet.

For now, though, not much can be said about the PS5 with the focus on the PS4 Pro so fans will just have to keep their eyes peeled.
