PlayStation 4 Pro release date: Sony clarifies 4K upscale gaming claims

After the PlayStation 4 Pro was unveiled early this month, a lot of the ongoing discussions about Sony's next-generation console involve its 4K resolution gaming capabilities.

This is one of the things that Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Andrew House spoke about in his latest interview with Digital Spy.

When asked by the publication if the 4K gaming in the PS4 Pro is a misleading claim as the majority of games do not render 4K resolution, House said that it is definitely far from that.

"I think that whatever the term is, it's a question of whether people see a demonstrable difference in the game experience or not, rather than the term we use to apply to it," the Sony executive explained.

He also clarified that instead of native 4K gaming on the PS4 Pro, the console will be more about upscaling the majority of the games. This means that the titles will get a visual boost to be in line with 4K TVs.

As far as 4K gaming goes in the PS4 Pro, it is just a matter of graphics improvement for Sony and making sure users notice the change.

Another point of discussion about the PS4 Pro is the lack of the 4K Blu-ray drive, which its competitor, the Xbox Project Scorpio, boasts and even takes pride in.

This led many to think Sony is working towards a digital-only future, which House said is not the case. "If you look at our current business, we see very stable sales of packaged media when it comes to games," he explained.

However, Sony also discovered that while consumers use the PS4 primarily for gaming, the video content is basically the secondary thing they do on the console.

"It is 5:1 in favour of streaming video versus packaged media. We looked at that and said that's probably where we should place our emphasis," he explained.

The PlayStation 4 Pro will be available starting this Nov. 10.
