'Paper Mario: Color Splash' release date: more action and adventure in game

 Nintendo

So we've always known Mario as this determined plumber who stars in a role-playing game, and jumps across mobile mushrooms and jumpy tortoises to get from one level to the next. This time around, Mario is back in a light, silly avatar.

Super Mario Wiki elaborates on the storyline, where Mario receives Toad and Princess Peach at his door. One thing leads to another, and when the heroic plumber finds Toad drained of all his colours, he sets out to find the villain who's behind the misdeed. The strategy requires Mario to make his way through a township, most of which is devoid of its colours. Fifteen minutes of the gameplay, as showcased on Polygon, reveal that Mario has a magic hammer that helps him recolour all the monochrome items along his way.

This version of Mario sports a welcome change from monotonous action-adventure to a quirkier and sillier setting. The game's producer Risha Tabata revealed in an interview with GameSpot, "When we think of what we cannot do in a traditional Mario game, what we came to was, 'Well, definitely humour.' So we wanted to focus on humour as much as possible." Tabata also supposedly disclosed that the people involved in creating the game got together to brainstorm ideas and to figure out the craziest things they could incorporate into the game-plan.

At its debut in the San Diego Comic-Con as well as at the E3 convention, the game was decently well-received. With its imminent release set for October 7th this year, it remains to be seen if the hype for the game among Mario fans continues to grow, or whittles down to nothing. In the meantime, some fans are taking to the older versions of the game, determined to have a run through them before the new title hits the stores.
