OnePlus 4 release date, specs, news: Device coming earlier than expected?

OnePlus came out with the OnePlus 3T barely six months after the OnePlus 3, and this had many thinking that the OnePlus 4 might arrive sooner than fans expect.

It is believed that the next OnePlus flagship will arrive a year after the OnePlus 3, which came out June this year. This makes the OnePlus 4's release the same month next year.

However, considering that OnePlus 3T was released five months after its predecessor, it is expected that the OnePlus 4 could arrive in May 2017.

A few weeks back, however, a leak from Weibo suggested that the OnePlus 4 is coming by June or July. If this is accurate, OnePlus will take its time on its next offering and prolong the release gap.

During an AMA Reddit session, OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei was asked some questions about the newly released OnePlus 3T and their future projects including the OnePlus 4.

When asked if the 3T's release will affect the numbering scheme making OnePlus 5 the next release instead of OnePlus 4, Pei said this is "not a bad idea actually, maybe."

When asked whether or not there will be T-branded OnePlus devices, Pei answered, "Honestly don't know, we'll have to see how this one goes. It's too early to tell."

Pei also answered questions about the lack of Daydream VR support on the OnePlus 3T. It turns out that Daydream is something that the company is not looking to bring forth this time.

Whether this will be the case for the OnePlus 4 or not remains to be seen, although Pei explicitly pointed out that they have "no plans right now" as far as the OnePlus 3T is concerned.

"VR with a phone strapped to your head is cute but not really useful in the near term. Ask people who've used other mobile VR products," he explained.

Meanwhile, one thing that users won't expect in the OnePlus 4 is a variant smaller than 5 inches. "It's too hard to fit a big enough battery into a [5-inch] device," Pei said.
