Before Microsoft took over, Nokia managed to bring in possibly the biggest phablet to ever grace the showground. Microsoft has focused mainly on mid-range and modest-specced handset so the supersized Nokia Lumia 1520, although released back in 2013, still stands as the prime flagship in the Windows-laden lineup.
On the other hand, Apple has just dipped its toe into the world of large-screened smartphones with the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus. Its first crack at the category easily fetched the titanic tech firm a truckload of praises and mounting sales and shipments. It is easy to say that Apple has the tech community in its hands.
So is the Nokia Lumia 1520 still a worthy purchase over Apple's bigger flagship, the iPhone 6 Plus?
The iPhone 6 Plus is touted as the thinnest smartphone in the field at 7.1 mm. Its aluminum-caked body is a sure eye catcher. Apple's staple aerodynamic shells is one big reason the Apple community is in love with the Cupertino tech company. The handset also comes with a 5.5-inch Retina HD display, which promises higher resolution. In numbers, this "higher resolution" equates to 401 ppi pixel density.
The Nokia Lumia 1520, on the other hand, flaunts curved sides, rounded edges and colorful plastic sheathes. It is conspicuously the bulkier one not only for its 8.7 mm thickness but also for its beasty 6-inch IPS LCD screen. While it bears the same 1080p resolution as its contender, the Nokia Lumia 1520's visuals set at 364 ppi pixel density would not look as crisp as the iPhone 6 Plus'. Noteworthy here though is that its display is enough to make gaming and movies look visually stunning, making playtime a great experience.
The Nokia phone houses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.2 GHz. This is paired with either a 16 GB or a 32 GB storage capacity as well as 2 GB RAM. It has an SD card slot that solves a user's need for bigger memory (64 GB to be specific). Again, this looks enough for the game and movie buffs rocking the handset.
Apple has never squeezed in SD card slots in its devices. It wouldn't have to with the iPhone 6 Plus as it propped up the handset with 32 GB, 64 GB or 128 GB memory. However, there is only 1 GB of RAM. While this seems enough for the handset to perform well, many think that Apple was a bit parsimonious with this one. But with an A8 processor onboard, the iPhone 6 Plus still delivers.
Nokia is a big winner in the camera department. The Lumia 1520 features a hefty 16-megapixel rear-facing shooter complete with Carl Zeiss optics and optical image stabilization. The tech firm has always received great feedback in the camera department and the 1520 should net the same comments from users as well.
Apple opted for an 8-megapixel primary camera. For Apple faithfuls, this snapper should do.
Both smartphones are loaded with a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera.
In the battery area, the Nokia Lumia 1520 continues to amaze. According to GSM Arena, the handset can last up to 25 hours, thanks to its 3400 mAh battery unit. Users who use its juice for music jamming alone will get the ultimate fix from it as it is peddled to last for 124 hours. The Apple iPhone 6 Plus is bound to last for a whole day. According to reviews, it takes 12 hours of video playback before its battery dies but high-intensity gaming alone can buy it four hours more.
As per GSM Arena, the Nokia Lumia 1520 is priced at 350 euro, which is a little over half of the value of the iPhone 6 Plus that's worth 600 euro.
