NFL News: Heads roll on Black Monday

NFL

It was truly a Black Monday for three coaches and two general managers who got the pink slip in the National Football League.

With their respective teams faltering, some of the names that were axed confirmed earlier speculations. The list of names who got their walking papers include head coaches Rex Ryan of the New York Jets, Mike Smith of the Atlanta Falcons and Marc Trestman of the Chicago Bears.

Given their walking papers as well were John Idzik (Jets) and Phil Emery (Bears).

Ryan and Idzik's departure was something that many had expected although many believe that parting with Ryan could be a big mistake. Ryan, who is credited with back-to-back AFC championship appearances for the Jets back in 2009-2010, finished the season with a woeful 4-12 record.

Mike Smith coached his last game for the Falcons, suffering humiliating 34-3 rout against the Carolina Panthers. It was the second consecutive losing season for Smith. The Falcons ended the season with a 6-10 card.

Over in Chicago, Marc Trestman was fired after a dismal 5-11 record. The Bears ended the season with a lopsided 51-23 beating at the hands of the New England Patriots.

Aside from the names mentioned, Jim Harbaugh will also be leaving the San Francisco 49ers as many expected. Harbaugh is expected to move over to Michigan to coach the Wolverines in what is believed to be one of the richest contracts in football history. Harbaugh continues to be mum although Michigan is expected to announce his appointment soon.

"It's been the time of my life," Harbaugh said. "Been a lot of great memories, great moments. ... It's been a tremendous four years, it's been a pleasure to work and serve for this organization. I feel great about what we accomplished."

With the departure of these familiar faces, the teams in concern are expected to undergo a major overhaul and get themselves back on the right track.
