Anthony Davis has proven his worth and once the current NBA season ends, it should not be surprising to find the New Orleans Pelicans making sure he stays put.
Only in his third season, the 22 year old star forward has proven his worth and stands to be one of the NBA's elite players in the coming years. And before any team gets any ideas, the Pelicans are making sure he is given his due right where he right now.
The Pelicans are expected to offer Davis a maximum contract which could tip the $140 million mark once the 20116-17 season comes around. Davis boasts of impressive numbers which include 24.2 points per game and 10.2 rebound per outing.
Davis is one of the main reasons the Pelicans are in the playoffs, crushing the hopes of the Oklahoma City Thunder when they won over the defending champions, San Antonio Spurs, as the regular season came to a close. This marks the Pelicans first playoff appearance since letting go of Chris Paul who is now with the Los Angeles Clippers.
Though the Pelicans got swept by a streaking Golden State Warriors squad, Davis was undoubtedly out there fighting. He upped his averages to 31.4 points per game and 11.4 rebounds but the efforts were simply not enough to overcome the rampaging Warriors of coach Steve Kerr.
The Pelicans actually have a potent roster although the question of consistency comes to play.
Other stars which could have helped out Davis were Eric Gordon, Ryan Anderson, Tyreke Evans, and Jrue Holiday. The names mentioned had at one time been atop the NBA but were conspicuously a non-factor in the playoffs.
On whether these guys would still be around to comprise the supporting cast Davis needs remains a question for now. If not, they could be traded for younger and talented players to fill up the gaping holes in the Pelicans rotation.
