'Narcos' season 3 spoilers: Boyd Holbrook not returning next season? EP plays coy on Murphy's story

Pedro Pascal will reprise his role as DEA Agent Javier Pena on "Narcos" season 3, but it looks like the same cannot be said for Boyd Holbrook, who played Pena's partner, Steve Murphy.

Even though in real-life, Pena and Murphy returned to the United States after the takedown of the Medellin Cartel and Colombian drug kingpin Pablo Escobar, this might not be the case on the show.

The real Pena and Murphy were not involved in the clampdown of the Cali Cartel, but Pascal's Pena will likely be part of it in "Narcos" season 3. In fact, he will be on the job with two other DEA agents (played by Michael David-Stahl and Matt Whelan) working the case.

Pascal recently posted a photo from the set, suggesting that he is still in Colombia for the filming. Holbrook's inclusion, however, is yet to be confirmed.

Asked by The Hollywood Reporter about the actor's status in "Narcos" season 3, executive producer Eric Newman is playing coy about this, too.

"I am really proud of Murphy's story and the evolution," he told the publication. He then mused, "One of the things you have to consider is: Is his story over?"

Newman has said before that they might not follow the history books to the letter, and they may employ creative changes when they need to. This is certainly what is going on with Pascal, who the EP said, will find a way to be part of in "Narcos" season 3. As for Murphy, Newman's tease does not provide a clue about that.

However, Holbrook's schedule might not allow him to be in "Narcos" season 3 after all. The actor has spent most of his time filming three films and is will even star in "The Predator" movie.

In other news, Netflix has booked "Halt and Catch Fire" star Kerry Bishe for the role of Christina, an American woman who no longer wants anything to do with her Colombian husband who happens involved in the cartel. She seeks the help of the U.S. Embassy in order to get away from him.

"Narcos" season 3 will premiere in 2017.
