Windows 10 release date: Microsoft Lumia 640, 640 XL to get OS update first

Microsoft will launch its new operating system, Windows 10, to computer units first. And when the Redmond-based tech firm rolls it out to its smartphones, the Microsoft Lumia 640 and its bigger brother, the Lumia 640 XL, will be among the first to don it.

The news came from Ossi Korpela, a Microsoft General Manager from Scandinavia, who made a video showing off the Lumia 640, which was introduced together with its bigger kin during the Mobile World Congress earlier this year.

"It's a high end device that is affordable for the consumers and businesses. It will be the first device that will run, later on this year, Windows 10. This device will include the Office 365," Korpela said in the promotional video.

The Microsoft Lumia 640 is indeed a hulking package with a budget-friendly price. It comes with a 5-inch IPS display and is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor that's clocked at 1.2 GHz. This is complemented with a 1 GB RAM and an expandable 8 GB storage.

Equipped with an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with LED flash and autofocus, the Lumia 640 can shoot 1080p videos at 30 frames per second. On the front is a decent 1-megapixel shooter. It has a 2500 mAh battery that can last up to 17 hours on 3G.

The Microsoft Lumia 640 XL, which measures 5.7 inches, makes use of the same processing unit as well as RAM and storage. However, its cameras are more formidable — a 13-megapixel snapper on the back and a 5-megapixel shooter at the front. Its 3000 mAh battery can last up to a whole day.

Both the Microsoft Lumia 640 and 640 XL were launched in India last month. In addition, users in the U.K. can now get hold of the devices, which will be among the first to see Windows 10 in action.
