'Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' set to return for its fifth season on Dec. 1

The hit superspy series "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." has set its return date this year, after being delayed to make way for the miniseries "Inhumans." The show will be back for its fifth season starting on Dec. 1.

The new season will premiere in a big way, with a two-hour season opener which will air at 8 p.m. EDT. Subsequent episodes will air at its normal time of 9 p.m. starting Dec. 8.

The series has impressively grown from being a spin-off of the popular superhero team-up film "Avengers" to being one of the most popular shows on television. ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey noted that the show has continuously grown on the creative side, with the upcoming season being the strongest one yet.

"We're so proud of the way that 'Marvel's Agents of SHIELD' has grown creatively every season. The series is a top performer for us especially in delayed viewing where we see almost triple-digit increases," said Dungey. "Season five is their strongest season yet, and we can't wait for the fans to see it. We feel that the move to Friday, creating a 'genre night' on ABC, appeals to the show's loyal fan base."

In the upcoming season, fans will see the journey of Agent Coulson, played by Clark Gregg, and his crew as they find themselves transported into space.

Gregg dropped some slight hints regarding what fans can expect with season 5. "Now we're in space. We don't know where we are. We don't know who we're up against," he told SyFy Wire. "Although, I suspect Marvel fans will see some characters that they recognize."

After leaving fans wanting by missing the San Diego Comic Con earlier this year, the team behind "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." sought to make up to its fans. During the New York Comic Con this weekend, the Marvel TV head unveiled the first 20 minutes for the season 5 opener.
