Netflix's silence with regards to a "Marco Polo" season 3 renewal is being understood by some as an undeclared cancellation for the show.

It has been a couple of months since the second season of the series ended, but there remains no news about "Marco Polo" season 3. This is reportedly due to the streaming giant possibly pulling the plug on the show.

Before "Marco Polo" began, it was poised to be (and had the makings of) a worldwide phenomenon that will bring Netflix to international viewers, according to a report by Business Insider.

The show happens to be the second most expensive show next to "Game of Thrones," but "Marco Polo" has not gained the same level of following and popularity as the HBO juggernaut.

Netflix has not released data with regards to the performance of the show, but critics and reviews on websites like Rotten Tomatoes suggest a tepid reception.

There are only a few people who reviewed the second season of "Marco Polo" on Rotten Tomatoes, so it is difficult to gauge the general reception for it.

For the first season, however, a total of 33 votes generated a 24-percent out of 100-percent rating, which is bad news for Netflix. But there's clearly more to it for the company than the review on the site as it did not think twice about renewing it.

Show creator John Fusco also stated on Deadline that the second season received "the same high praise from both critics and viewers" as the first one did.

Data from Parrot Analytics also show that "Marco Polo" was the second most in-demand digital originals in the United States. It garnered enough to make to top 10 overall, joining the ranks of "The Walking Dead" and "Game of Thrones."

With all this in consideration, it is unclear what's stopping Netflix from making "Marco Polo" season 3 official. Some say it is the sky-high production costs that the show calls for.

However, Netflix does not really follow a schedule in renewing shows. It can take the streaming giant a month to decide, but it can also take them more than that.

That being said, fans will have to be patient in waiting for Netflix's verdict about "Marco Polo" season 3.
